PROTECTION FROM SECONDARY EFFECTS OF LIGHTNING (ATMOSPHERIC OVERVOLTAGES)

Fine electronic equipments defect very often during lightning strikes. There are cases when because of direct or near lightning strokes the TV sets of a whole neighborhood or the office equipment of a whole building damage. Atmospheric overvoltage formed as a consequence of lightings, have a high potential and high power. They could be formed in electrical supply and also in different communication lines (cable TV, Internet communications, telephone lines etc.).

THE EXTERNAL LIGHTNING PROTECTION INSTALLATION DO NOT PROTECT FROM THE APPEARANCE OF ATMOSPHERIC SURGES AND OVERVOLTAGES.

There is developed the standard IEC 62305 in EU for low-voltage surge protective devices (SPD) for protection of electronic equipments against atmospheric and commutation overvoltages. In accordance with this standard, the protection could be made as cascade on three levels:

• First level – by mounting arrester groups in the main electrical board of the building;
• Second level - by mounting arrester groups with varistors into the floor or apartment electrical board of the building.
  SHIRTEC offers combined protector groups with integrated first and second level protection. Therefore, by mounting of one arrester group into the main electrical board cancel the mounting of arrester groups in floor and apartment electrical boards;
• Third level - by mounting sensible overvoltage filters inside the final contacts or inside connection-blocks used for this purpose. For combined protection, we offer connection-blocks with combined protection on power supply network, TV-network, phone line and others.
